Toward Prosperity - SANKIN KOUTAI -

The old highways were developed gradually due to The Daimyo's SANKIN KOUTAI and the distribution.

Cf.1 Daimyo: The feudal lord
Cf.2 SANKIN KOUTAI:
SANKIN means Going to work

KOUTAI means Rotation

The Daimyo had to keep the castle in his fief and house in Edo, called the Edo Mansion. The Daimyo had to work in Edo as long as he worked in his fief for three years. however, his wife had to remain Edo. She was like a hostage of the government.
This system was called SANKIN KOUTAI, which let Daimyo's power control and succeed for becoming stable of Edo government.
The Daimyo were in trouble of heavy outlay for it. On the other hand, while this system represented a great expense, it produced good results and resulted in improved transportation and economic strength for the post towns, like TSUMAGO, which thrived.
