The Old Nakasendo Highway

The Old Nakasendo highway was also constructed in 1602. Because it was constructed for horses and foot traffic, it was probable narrow, and Japan did not make use of carts like Europe or China. It had a total length of less than 544km (320miles). There were 69 post towns on the old Nakasendo highway and TSUMAGO was the 42nd from Edo.

More History ···Kiso District and TSUMAGO

NAGISO, Important Transportation Link

NAGISO that has TSUMAGO, as the southern gateway of the Kiso district, was important place linking transportation along the old Nakasendo highway, which ran north and south and was crossed by roads like the SEINAIJI, OUDAIRA and HIDA highways which ran east and west.
Along these roads has passed a long history.

The Economic Development in Kiso

The Kiso district lies entirely in the mountains, but its lifestyle was advanced in those days because the culture of Edo (Tokyo) and Kyo (Kyoto) passed through along the old NAKASENDO highway, and the people lived under a monetary economy system, working along the highway or in the mountains.
