Step2.Why is TSUMAGO Important?

Japan is preserving TSUMAGO as an important historical site.

The preservation for development.

Although not as large as some post towns, TSUMAGO became a unique community because of high vision and effort of local residents.

Lucky!

First of all, TSUMAGO was fortunate. Many post towns suffered damage and loss from fires in Kiso district, but Tsumago had few troubles and still retains the large street from ancient times.

Toward Preservation

After World War II, when Japan enjoyed high economic growth, TSUMAGO began to focus on the appreciation of historical buildings and houses.
They maintained traditional rows of stores and houses, and restored and cultural estates.

TSUMAGO was first designated as a " protected area for the preservation
of traditional buildings " by the Japanese Government in 1976.
The beautiful scenery of TSUMAGO is being maintained by continuing preservation projects.

TSUMAGO, just like Rothenburg in Germany, Williamsburg in the United States,
is drawing public attention from all over the world.

Each year, as many as eight hundred thousand people will visit TSUMAGO. They all seem impressed with the history of this community. The preservation is not only for rows of streets but the mountains and the rivers!
